The San Juan Solstice 50 mile endurance run is a scenic and very difficult loop through the high San Juans. The run consists of five main sections: the climb up Alpine Gulch, the climb up to the old mining town of Carson, a long section along the Continental Divide, a descent to Slumgullion Pass, and a final hump up and over the Vicker's Ranch plateau. The San Juan Solstice 50 is for the experienced trail runner only.

Start:, 5am, Town Park, Lake City, CO. 55 miles south of Gunnison on Hwy 149. 55 miles north of Creede on Hwy 149.

Course: One counter-clockwise loop; altitudes ranging from 8,600' to 13,334'; 12,000'+ elevation gain; mostly trails, some jeeproads. Middle-of-pack runner: expect 12-14 hours. 16:00 cut-off.

Aid: will be available at 6 locations. We will try to set out many kinds of foods for your dining pleasure. Aid Stations #2 - #5 are fully stocked with sandwiches, and the usual array of cookies, chips, bannanas, etc. Aid Stations #1 and #6 are not as fully equiped as few runners eat at mile 8, and few can eat at mile 47. Note: there are 2 nine-mile stretches between aid up there on the Divide. Carry a lot and be ready for anything.

CUT-OFFS: will be in effect at aid #2, Williams Creek (10:15 am), aid #3, Carson (12:30 pm), and at aid #6, Slumgullion Pass (6pm). There is a 16-hour cut-off at the finish line (9 pm). You must be out of the aid station at the published cut off time, to the second according to the race clock. Please note these cutoffs before you send us your entry, as they will be strictly enforced for your safety!

RACE ETHICS: ENVIRONMENT FIRST is the credo of this run. Any runner caught messing with the local ecology will be pulled. If you throw any trash, including drink cups, on the ground, you will be DQ’d. Never litter ANYWHERE. Bury human waste at least 6” deep, 200’ from water sources and 50’ from any trail.
Use common sense and courtesy with respect to the land, water, and all others out there enjoying the mountains, including race volunteers. Just because you’re running does not mean you have the right of way or the right to be impolite. We know you’re tired; try not to be cranky about it. The old Ultra “no whining” rule is in effect at this event.

How to Avoid The Porta Potty During a Race

We've all seen it and most of us have done it ... 30 minutes (or less) into a race athletes are already looking for a port potty. The good news is that it doesn't have to be that way. The secret is a proper hydration plan before the gun goes off, and here's how you do it.

See why athletes are making the switch to e-Gel, the only Electrolyte Energy Gel. Get 230 mg Sodium, 85 mg Potassium and more complex carbs than any other gel.
