Swim: The race begins in typical fashion with the swim – a 500 yard pool swim in the beautiful Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center – one of the finest swimming facilities on the east coast – and the venue for many high-level national swimming meets. The aquatic center is set up on race day to take advantage of the 50-meter pool. 20 lanes are set up – with each lane being 25 yards in length (for those swimmers in the crowd – the pool is set up “short course”). Participants snake their way across the pool – going up in one lane and coming back in the next lane. Lane changes are made at the end of each lane – the advantage here being that participants are only swimming one direction in each lane. This makes passing people very easy. That being said, it is still important to submit an accurate 500 yard swim time when registering (the 500 yard swim time is required for registration). By submitting an accurate swim time you’re seeding yourself correctly – which puts you in the water on race day surrounded by other participants who are comparable swimmers to you.

Bike: Once out of the water, participants begin the 10 mile bike ride – which is set up as a two-lap course. 2.5 miles out and 2.5 miles back (done twice). This bike course is closed to vehicular traffic which explains the need to have 50 Charlotte police officers working this race. There are a couple of decent size hills on the course – nothing too steep or long.

Run: The 5K run course takes place on the sidewalk system in the downtown area. A portion of the course is set up as a double-loop. As with the bike course there are some long gradual hills – three to be exact. The run course is great for spectators - as they can situate themselves near the transition area and finish line and still see you run by three times during the course of the run.
