About Komen LA County and Breast Cancer
One woman in eight will battle breast cancer during her lifetime; in LA County alone, approximately 6,000 people are diagnosed each year and 1,000 die. When breast cancer is detected early however, lives can be saved. Seventy-five percent of the net income of the Los Angeles County Race for the Cure funds local programs for LA County women including mammograms; early detection outreach and education for at-risk and underserved groups including African Americans, Latinas and women under 40; and support for breast cancer patients. In the last year, nearly 19,000 people in LA County were able to access free breast health services because of money raised through the LA County Race and other fundraising efforts by Susan G. Komen® Los Angeles County. The 25% balance of the net proceeds is invested in Susan G. Komen’s national grant programs funding groundbreaking research.
Komen LA County is a local charity serving the communities of Los Angeles County; we are an Affiliate of Susan G. Komen®, the world’s largest breast cancer organization, funding more breast cancer research than any other nonprofit while providing real-time help to those facing the disease.
To date, the Affiliate has raised over $10 million for community-based grants to local LA County health organizations. Through these grants, Komen LA County provides crucial funding for breast cancer diagnostic services, educational programs, patient navigation and psychosocial support.
