A WHOLE LOT OF RUNNING AND A WILDLY FUN TIME AT NORTHWEST TREK

Wildlife parkís annual Run Wild event on Oct. 5 offers 5k and 8k runs and a 5k walk through the forest; runners get their times, and 5k course is U.S. Track & Field certified

EATONVILLE, Wash. - Itís nearly race day, and the staff at Northwest Trek is readying an event that will have runners and walkers doing a happy dance.

The annual Run Wild 5k an 8k runs and 5k walk allow participants the rare joy of pounding paved trails through the beauty of Northwest Trek Wildlife Park. No barking dogs to disrupt the quiet. No bicyclists, skateboarders or cars to dodge. Just a lush forest canopy under which to run or walk.

This yearís event is set for 8:30 a.m. Oct. 5.

Runners are chip timed, and the 5k course is USA Track & Field certified.

T-shirts are included with the registration fee, but each participant must register by Sept. 26 in order to guarantee his or her shirt is available.

And, perhaps best of all, proceeds from Run Wild help support programs at Northwest Trek.

Thereís lots of fresh air and exercise, too, of course. Portions of the way are hilly, and 8k runners will find their athletic shoes slapping gravel along some of the paths.

Registration includes park admission as well as the race shirt. All runners and walkers also will be entered in a raffle for a number of prizes.

Parking is extremely limited, so runners and walkers are encouraged to carpool. The pre-race gates close at 7:50 a.m. and no one will be admitted later. Participants should get on site early.

Registration is $30 before midnight Oct. 2; $40 on race day.

And a trip to Northwest Trek is like a little mini-vacation. The wildlife park is located near Eatonville, just an hourís drive from Seattle and less than an hour from Tacoma. Yet it feels like a world away. Tall evergreens and lush undergrowth provide a soothing setting to help melt stress away.

And, of course, there is exhibit after exhibit of native Northwest animals, and a narrated 50-minute tram tour through the Free-Roaming area, where visitors can see bison, Roosevelt Elk, bighorn sheep, moose, deer and other animals.
