HAMMERHEAD 100 BRIDGES TO BREAKERS
Two summers ago Joey Harrington was hit by a car while riding his bike on the streets of Portland. The Harrington Family Foundation plans to channel the attention from this accident to educate our community to the hazards associated with bicycle travel with the aim of reducing and preventing injuries to children. The significance of the issue has inspired the Foundation to organize a signature event that raises both awareness and funds for bicycle safety. The second annual Hammerhead 100 Bridges to Breakers will take place on September 21, 2013 and will generate much-needed capital and exposure for bicycle safety.
Website and Registration – Beginning May 1, 2012
Electronic registration will be available through the Harrington Family Foundation site as well as the Bridges to Breakers site. Registration fee will be $75. The foundation has created a website (bridgestobreakers.com) for the Bridges to Breakers event that will balance the promotion of the ride, race logistics and information about its partners and supporting charities.
There will be an option for riders to raise another $125, which can be donated to our partner charities. The website will showcase the partner-charities and provide tools to assist participants in their fundraising efforts. Riders will be able to select the charity that they would like their fundraising pledges to benefit.

Course Description THE ROUTE:
Oregon is known for scenic and diverse cycling routes and the routes on this ride are no exception. The fun challenging century course begins at the McMenamins in St. Johns. We will go over the St. Johns bridges and head west on highway 30 to Scappoose. The 60 mile riders will start in Vernonia and will meet up with the century riders at the Mist Clatskanie Hwy and Nehalem Hwy 47 junction. This is where we will begin the sweeping pastoral country views on Hwy 202.
After our first stop, the course continues along Fall Creek and Messing Creek and then we will pick up the Nehalem River. After stopping for lunch at Birkenfield Country Store we continue toward the coast with a warm welcome that awaits finishers in Gearhart at the McMenamins Gearhart Hotel and Sand Trap Pub.
There will be five rest stops approximately 20 miles apart between the start and finish that will provide food, water, bike repair and first aid resources. The event will organize for an additional cost bus rides back to Portland from the coast for those riders who do not wish to stay the evening at the coast.
Post Race Activities The ride will conclude at the McMenamins Gearhart Hotel and Sand Trap Pub for a Beach Party Blast, which is located five miles north of Seaside along the Gearhart Golf Links, an 18-hole public golf course. |
