Otero County has many nonprofits large and small that rescue animals of all kinds, dogs, cats, ferrets, horses, goats, you name it, they rescue animals in the sunset of their lives, animals who are in imminent danger of being euthanized. This race donates all profits to the nonprofit rescue agency of your choice in Otero County, just designate an agency and give us any additional information you have as to their contact person. Approximately 1/2 of your registration fee will go to the agency, 1/2 towards the cost of the race. AlamoShape takes no profits from their races. An independent accounting firm will confirm all donations. Pets are welcome at this evening race with plentiful water stations along the route. The race provides a variety of scenic gems as you run east towards the mountains and then round the bend at the 5K turnaround and head north. We'll provide plenty of sunscreen, bandana coolies, and snacks at the abundant water stations along the route. For just $35 get a free t-shirt, bandana coolie, free picnic fare and a lot of great goodies! We will offer doggie wading pools and snacks for those who bring their pets along in the shorter distance 5K. Prices go up after Sept 1 so register early! T-shirts are available for the first 150 participants. Stay afterwards for great live music from Lil Eddie and the Boys as Jerry's Lounge sets up a beer garden during the awards ceremony.
Bring the kids and spend your weekend here at various tourist spots and several national and state parks. The Oliver Lee Memorial State Park is about 10 miles south on U.S. Route 54, offers camping, hiking, and picnicking. The White Sands National Monument is located about 15 miles SW of Alamogordo along US Route 70 and is a beautiful field of white sand dunes composed of gypsum crystals. They usually have informative presentations on their popular full-moon nights when the park is open late into the evening. The Lincoln National Forest offers hiking, fishing, and camping. The Sidney Paul Gordon Shooting Range, located about 3 miles north of town at 19 Rock Cliff Road in La Luz, is a supervised range with rifle, pistol, and archery ranges. Several competitions are held at the range each month.
