Get all our latest running tips and race info! We think of ourselves as Athletes. We are proud of our accomplishments. We run as best as we can and we try to make it fun! Train 20 miles with us and become an official Bad News Bear.

A small group of co-workers began exercising together as a way to support and encourage each other to become more healthy. We had all worked out individually in various activities, but our friendship at work soon became a platform to launch a crusade to get fit.

We started with just afew co-workers and have grown to six core members: Michelle Alexander (Instructor), Katie Heaton (Instructor), Alexis Holladay (Student Services Advisor), Hector Rodriguez (IT Technician), Luis Ibarra (former Instructor/IT Technician) and MarthaEspinosa-Kroll (LLRC Manager). We also had a few other co-workers join us such as Glenda Finley (Instructor) and Veronica Warner (LLRC Coordinator). In addition many co-workers have attended the events to show their support.

A few of us started our journey by attending Zumba classes at a local gym. We even helped coordinate a Zumbathon in which Heald College-Fresno was a sponsor. Then, we signed up to participate in the four-mile July 4th Freedom Run at Woodward Park.

We started out running at the gym and hitting the streets to prepare for the race. We would meet at 5 a.m. every Tuesday and Thursday to run short distances and at 6 a.m. on Saturdays for longer, more challenging runs. After our first race together we were hooked! We set a goal to run a half marathon in November.

We challenged each other to participate in other races to stay motivated. In October, we were sponsored by Heald College-Fresno to run the Me N Ed’s Cross City Race. Our team adopted the name “Bad News Bears” because of our less than professional running image and attitudes. We didn’t look like your typical athletes; we were a hodge-podge group with different levels of experience and different medical issues. Some members of our team have joint pain, Asthma, or Diabetes.

As our endurance grew, so did our competitiveness. Our team came in 3rd place at the Me N Ed's Cross City Race. And the women of the team also undertook the challenge to run in the mud at the NorCal Warrior Dash in October. It was a 5k race involving outrageous obstacles, amud crawl, and jumping over fire!…exhilarating! In November, we ran the Vision Eye Q Two Cities Half Marathon. It was a grueling 13.1 miles, but we were all able to complete it with personal best times.

Our next goal…more races and eventually afull marathon!! We greatly appreciate the support of our co-workers and the sponsorship of our Campus President, Carolyn Pierce. Their support made us feel like phenomenal athletes! ~Martha Espinosa-Kroll
